The Inspiration to Be The Best Version of Me

Shared byBrian E.

I miss Bill. I didn’t see Bill all the time but every time I saw Bill he inspired me to be a better human being. No one else in this world has had that immediate and consistent affect on me. Without fail I would leave my interactions with Bill feeling humbled and guilty for not doing enough to help others. That guilt would quickly turn to inspiration and I’d use that inspiration to help someone else. Every time I saw him, the same cycle occurred. I miss that wave of emotion and inspiration that he uniquely created within me. I need it. I need to be more like Bill.

Two of my favorite traits in human beings are (1) being both interesting and interested and (2) making those around you feel comfortable so they can be at their best. Bill was the gold standard in both traits. In every conversation he would probe into the wellbeing and needs of the other individual while being open and honest in response to questions. Bill went well beyond making people feel welcomed he got people to jump in and participate.

We’ve all seen this numerous times. These traits are rare. He was rare. I miss him. I need to be more like Bill.

Two examples of these amazing traits represent Bill’s impact on me. I was blessed to be part of Team Chase for the CAF ride on multiple occasions. Those week long bike adventures were moments of pure joy, inspiration and friendship. Bill and Lori’s generosity and hospitality created a unique environment for every single individual on the team.

I was in Vegas with my son and God son for a soccer event and realized there was a Pac 10 basketball tournament in town. I texted Bill and immediately was told to meet at the back door promptly at 6:30. I was met by an ESPN staffer and we were led through several tunnels and onto floor seats. After the game, Bill handed my son and my God son boxes of gear to carry and said, “come on, we are going to dinner.” 3 hours later we left dinner with full bellies, big smiles and lots of stories to tell. My son and God son will never forget how special that night was and how welcome Bill made them feel.

I miss Bill. I need to be more like Bill.
