A One of Kind
Bill was a one of a kind. How do you explain winning 147 basketball games with no losses at Helix High and UCLA over a 5 year period? Once Bill put that amazing mind of his to work there was nothing he could not achieve. After an athletic career cut short by injury he set his mind on overcoming stuttering to become an Emmy award winning announcer voted one of the 50 best sportscasters of all time.
But it was not in the major accomplishments that Bill amazed me and others. It was his kindness and generosity that set him apart. How many times did I see him stop at the side of the road, stop at the side of the stage, stop at the side of the room to engage with someone he just met. How many people became his “best friend” and were invited to his home, to a concert, to a dinner, to a bike ride, to an event. It numbers in the thousands.
Bill loved his hometown of San Diego. Many times he would say, “If the Pilgrims would have landed in San Diego the east coast of the U.S. would still be a wilderness today”.
Yes Bill was a one of a kind and we miss him.
